We chose our cake!

September 24, 2022

Over the last couple months we have tried so many cakes. We tried most of the vegan cake bakers in LA, and some non-vegan ones that have a few vegan options. We both agreed that Cake Girl had the best flavors and texture. Amazingly, everything they offer is gluten-free, wheat-free, egg-free, dairy-free, soy-free, nut-free (except coconut).

There is coconut in their gluten free flour mixture, so for those of you who can’t do coconut, we also ordered some bites of their delicious brownies, which have all of the previous qualities and are also coconut free.

If we didn’t tell you the cake and brownies are vegan, you probably wouldn’t notice, their desserts are really good.

Our Selections

We’ll have a small tiered cake for ceremonial cutting, the top tier is matcha green tea cake with strawberry frosting between the layers, and the larger tier at the bottom will be vanilla with strawberry frosting between the layers. The outside will be watercolor-effect/marbled. I’m excited to see how it comes out!

We also got a couple sheet cakes, so there will be a lot of flavor options. We both loved the cookies n’ cream flavor the most, so we will have that and a vanilla with rainbow sprinkles.

Placing the Order

We dropped in to Cake Girl after picking Greg’s suit, and the co-owner Amy graciously accommodated us and sat down to work through the options. While she went in back to work up a quote based on our discussion, Greg and I sat at the counter sipping coffee and trying the cake flavors in cupcake form.

We re-tried the cookies n’ cream to confirm it is still our favorite, and tried the matcha and loved the warm nutty, not too sweet taste, plus the beautiful green and pink color scheme

About Cake Girl

Cake Girl is an allergy-friendly sweets shop run by Amy Tam and Andres Fuentes. They are located in an old soda fountain counter inside St. Louis Drug Co. in Boyle Heights.

Greg and I first tried their cupcakes back in 2018 or 19 when we did an exploration day, having fun seeing what interesting places we could get to on the gold line since we had recently moved so close to a station. We took the train to a few of the Boyle Heights stops and walked around the various shops. In addition to the cupcake we picked up from Cake Girl, I got a book of music lessons so I could start playing my saxophone again.

Anyway, drool over their instagram here, or head in for a preview taste (they also make gluten free donuts and cookies).

Here’s their address:
